Average review score:

Chicken Little
I read this book to my 20 month old and she loved it. Chicken Little is the first book she goes for when she wants to be read to. The illustrations keep her enthralled from start to finish and she loves to mimic the animal sounds as we go. This classic tale will live on forever in our home.

Cobol: A Pragmatic Approach
Published in Paperback by Prentice Hall College Div (January, 1978)
Authors: Robert T. Grauer and Marshall A. Crawford
Average review score:

A near-excellent introductory COBOL slef-study book
I first encountered this book in the fall of 1978 (that was 24 years ago) and I read the book from cover to cover and was very impressed by the way the authors demonstarted how COBOL programming was all about. At that time, there were many other COBOL books around but very few could teach COBOL in such a neat and precise way. Two years later, the concept of Structured Programming began popular and made this book sound out-of-date. But compared to other new books, this book was still outstanding in terms of learning how to do COBOL programming. Ten years later, OOP (Object Oriented Programming) further replaced Structured Programming as the mainstream of programming methodolody. But, again this book is still worthwhile reading for the purpose of grasping COBOL basic concepts after 24 years.

The Day Satchel Paige and the Pittsburgh Crawfords Came to Hertford, N.C.: Baseball Stories and Poems
Published in Paperback by McFarland & Company (April, 1992)
Author: Mike Shannon
Average review score:

Nice Combination
Mike Shannon, SPITBALL editor, has proven himself over the years as the Don Quixote of this area of literature. THE DAY... collects his short stories and poems about baseball.

There is nothing highbrow about this collection; indeed, the writer manages to imprint in his stories the love of a game that has as its roots, the rural and small town areas of the country. Shannon is no Cormac McCarthy, but his stories have a great deal of heart and enough intrigue to grab the reader's interest.

The poems, which are assembled from three previous shorter collections, are written in the straight-ahead fashion that I have come to expect from Shannon. He has lived close to the game, and these poems take the reader there. Whether he's writing about Willie Mays, Ernie Banks, or the troubled Pete Rose Reds of the 80's, there's never any doubt about the authenticity of his knowledge, never any doubt that he will deliver work that is both entertaining and moving.

Developing Research Skills: A Laboratory Manual
Published in Paperback by Allyn & Bacon (March, 1995)
Authors: Helen J. Crawford and Larry B. Christensen
Average review score:

Excellent supplementary text for Psych Research
I've been teaching undergraduate Research Methods in Psychology for over 10 years now and this laboratory manual has been a jewel. The exercises use real published research to teach specific skills. And the price is quite reasonable given the prices of most college textbooks. I highly recommend psych profs responsible for teaching research methods give this supplemental text a good look. The only drawback is that it is a bit dated. It hasn't been updated since 1995, and the publisher doesn't seem interested in publishing a newer edition. This is the only reason I don't give it 5 stars. But really, do you need the most recent research for an intro to research methods course?

Discipline from Birth to Three: How Teen Parents Can Prevent and Deal With Discipline Problems With Babies and Toddlers (Teens Parenting Series)

Authors: Jeanne Warren Lindsay, Sally McCullough, and David Crawford
Average review score:

Review from a teen mom
I thought that this book was very good. I loved the quotes from actual teen parents- I could really relate. The suggestions were very good. The only thing I didnt really like was that there wasn't enough focus on teen parents that were possitive.

Average review score:

This is a great book with new and unique perspectives.
This is a great book which gives a new perspective to the Texas War for Independence, and the Mexican War. He explains himself very well and blames himself some, but mostly his subordiantes. He is very respectful to the American and Texas forces. This book is a must read for 1840's enthusiasts!

Four fabulous faces : Swanson, Garbo, Crawford, Dietrich
Published in Unknown Binding by Galahad Books ()
Author: Larry Carr
Average review score:

When glamour was glamour
As an adolescent, I must have spent hours studying my mom's copy of this book. On page after page of photos (from films, promotional shoots and other sources) I noted and compared the curve of eyebrows and shape of lips, the placement of beauty marks, the lines of hairstyles and figures, etc. Those images have stayed with me -- the very definition of womanly class and style. This book is full of beautifully done photographs of four strong, sexy women from a time when glamour was glamour. I highly recommend it.
